The continent of Africa boasts the greatest variety of natural wonders, animals and plants. The diversity and versatility is so immense that it would take you a lifetime to explore it all. It's hard to come up with a list of just ten sites. But here is our selection. Tell us what you think.

10. Namaqualand, Namibia and South Africa

The location doesn't look impressive - it's dry, arid and flat. However, in spring it becomes surreal. Thousands of colourful flowers begin to bloom and spread a fragrant cloud over Namaqualand. Tourists often come to admire the site, which is transformed into a true masterpiece.

Why go there?

Richtersveld - part of Namaqualand - is a National Park and World Heritage Site. Many visitors come to see the phenomenon in spring.

9. Mount Nyiragongo, Democratic Republic of Congo

This active volcano is famous for housing the world's largest lava lake. The volcano's slopes are steep and the lava is very fluid, allowing it to flow at high speed when it erupts. However, the lava lake is not there all the time. It takes years to form and then it's a matter of days before the crater walls crack and the lava erupts.

Why go there?

The last eruption took place in 2002. Today, the volcano's activity is closely monitored and the lava is slowly rising again, forming a lake.

8. Underwater waterfall, Mauritius

This isolated island in the Indian Ocean, 2,000 km from Africa, is a highly attractive tourist destination. The underwater waterfall, located on the south-west coast, could serve as a signature for Mauritius. It's not a real waterfall, but an optical illusion: sand and silt sediments create this spectacular site. The reason for this is that the island is relatively new and a formation is still present, causing an underwater slope.

Why go there?

Tourists are invited to relax on the white sandy beaches and enjoy the warm water, explore the mountains, the reef and the marine world.

7. Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Probably the most beautiful canyon in the world, it stretches for 25 km north of the Drakensberg. It is certainly the largest green canyon on Earth, with lush foliage covering the steep red sandstone cliffs. As well as thick forests, the canyon is also home to a variety of species, including hippos, antelopes and numerous primates. There are also several waterfalls and viewpoints.

Why go there?

Tourists explore the site by hiking trails or even on horseback. Other activities include rafting, hot-air ballooning, fly-fishing, cycling, day trips and boat trips on the Blyde Dam.

6. Namib Desert, Namibia

One of the most fascinating sights we've ever seen is in Namibia, where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. However, there's no other way to see it other than from the air. The vast desert stretches for thousands of kilometres before dropping into cold, stormy waves. However, it is possible to get close to the dunes on a tour and to Kolmanskop, a ghost town ruined by the desert, which is now a popular tourist destination.

Why go there?

The Namib-Naukluft National Park, however, is accessible to tourists. The special feature of this place are the red dunes, which create a truly magnificent landscape.

5. Victoria Falls

Situated on the border between two countries - Zambia and Zimbabwe - this magnificent waterfall is one of the most popular in the world. The waterfall was named after Queen Victoria by Scottish explorer David Livingstone. However, the locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya - the smoke that roars. What's more, it has an unusual devil's pool - a natural pool on the Zambian side.

Why go there?

The site is very popular with tourists, so many buses and trains go there, making it an easily accessible place.

4. Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa

The iconic peak overlooks the bustling city and attracts hikers and climbers alike. Although it's easily accessible on foot, there's also a cable car, which is popular with visitors. What's more, the innovative floors of the cars rotate, offering added excitement and views of the city, ocean and mountains.

Visit the mountain and its famous Lion's Head - a peak overlooking the abyss, take in the breathtaking panoramic views from the top.

It's not a very difficult mountain to climb - you don't have to be a professional. However, altitude sickness often prevents you from reaching the 5,895 m (19,341 ft) summit. There are some really pretty glaciers at the top.

Africa's highest mountain offers a variety of routes of varying degrees of difficulty. If you're not climbing, there's plenty to see in Kilimanjaro National Park.
