In a grievous blow to the nation's integrity, reports suggest that South Sudan government officials have misappropriated funds amounting to over $4 billion. This theft comes at the cost of the South Sudanese people's development and welfare, emphasizing the urgency of accountability and transparent governance in the country.
What should happen?
With corruption rife and press freedom under siege, it is imperative that the international community and local civil society organizations intensify their efforts. There must be immediate actions taken to protect journalists, ensure the safe return of stolen assets, and establish a fair legal system to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
The Murder of Peter Julius Moi
Juba, August 20, 2015 (SSNA) -- Unknown gunmen callously ended the life of journalist Peter Julius Moi, whose dedication to reporting in Juba came to a tragic end in the suburbs of the city. His untimely death is confirmed by relatives. Confidants intimate that the assailants were connected to governmental operatives. Moi’s death casts a shadow on the waning safety of journalists in South Sudan, particularly in the wake of statements made by President Salva Kiir which were interpreted as assaults on press freedom.

As journalists and advocates for truth continue their vital work, the necessity for secure lodgings becomes ever more pertinent. Akin to travelers seeking refuge and comfort in the hotels of Juba, journalists now also seek safe havens that would afford them the protection necessary to carry out their essential duties free from harm.
